There is allot of overgrowth on the trail on the east side of the loop. I went during peak foliage and it was breathtaking...and chilly! I’d say this hike is moderate, rather than difficult. Once we got to the summit we were unable to locate the Mud Brook Trail. The Aroostook Valley Trail is 28.8-mile wonder and a tour through the backcountry. Hikers will notice narrower trails and fewer signs within the Wilderness. My husband had to do a lot of clearing and essentially trail blazing as we hiked through. Easy to follow even with few blazes.

I was a little mislead as this address starts you off at Black Mountain (easy). From active farm fields to deep woods, lazy streams to the big Aroostook River, the scenery along the route is pleasantly varied. Trail itself needs some maintenance but I am grateful something like this exists off-island. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. The rest is pretty self-explanatory. 459 Route 774 You can tackle it either by starting from Route 113 (closed in winters) or from the Bog Road.
View at the top is worth it. There were no rock formations (cairns). I thought the Mud Brook Trail junction would be harder to find, given the comments, but there is a tall sign post that makes the turn onto Mud Brook Trail clear. Or was in July 2016.

This would be a beautiful hike for all three seasons. This area is a great hike with long stretches above tree line and lots to see. The tricky part is finding the Mud Brook Trail.
